This superb giltwood console table is a fine example of French 19th century, Louis XVI revival. It dates to circa 1870. At this time the console was a prestigious item of furniture , placed prominently in entrance halls or salons it was traditionally surmounted by a grand mirror of a matching style. The Louis XVI style harks back to the classical furniture and architecture of the Romans and Greeks with much use made of fluted columns, carved friezes, wreaths , laurel leaves, classical urns and moldings.
This beautiful console displays all the hallmarks of Louis XVI style. It is decorated with a finely carved classical frieze, draped with carved wreaths of flowers and laurel leaves , the legs are tapered and fluted and the base is crowned with a grecian urn. The workmanship is superb and the marble is original, unusual and exquisite.
